How to do Valentine's Day Differently.

Valentine’s Day was always a special day when I was working at Southwest Airlines and it continues to be as I build my own business. For me, it’s a reminder to love others, and myself, from a place of gratitude, rather than expectation. 

 

It’s easy to get caught up in the expectations we have from others on days like today. We focus on what others “should” say and do.

 

But what if instead, we chose to make our gratitude greater than our expectations today?


Here’s some practical ways to try this out. Even if you’re not feeling very grateful, gratitude is like love– it grows with every small, simple moment of action.

 

  • Write yourself an affirmation note. Include your Strengths, what you’re grateful for, and what excites you about the next 90 days.
  • Forgive. The weight of unforgiveness and judgment is heavy. What can you forgive yourself for today? What about someone you love?
  • Reframe. When you have thoughts of expectations, reframe them to gratitude. Instead of “I wonder what my partner will give me today,” try thinking, “What can I do for others today? I’ve been given so much.” 
  • Reach out. Extend love to those in your community who have experienced deep loss. Can you drop off flowers or dinner, or send a kind note in the mail?

 

A few years back, I started a new tradition on Valentine’s Day.  Instead of wondering what I was going to get from my loved ones, a few friends and I got in the habit of focusing our energy on those we knew were hurting instead. 

 

The feeling of giving back on this special day has brought me far more joy than receiving gifts.
