Empowering Women through Storytelling and Confidence with Joya Dass
Sep 19, 2024Listen on:
How do you find your voice and tell your story in a powerful way? As a news anchor and public speaking coach, Joya Das has made it her mission to help women do just that.
The Power of Storytelling
Joya Dass’s career in broadcasting began at a young age, inspired by her father’s nightly ritual of watching NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw. Growing up as the daughter of immigrants, Joya was nurtured by her mother to become a writer, participating in spelling contests and essay competitions. This early foundation paved the way for her to pursue her dream of becoming a news anchor, a goal she achieved through determination and hard work.
Today, Joya uses her experience in storytelling to guide women leaders. She emphasizes that effective communication is essential, whether it's for landing a board seat, launching a consultancy, or securing a promotion. As Joya explains, “I’m helping you to really shape that clay into something for a business end.” Her approach is holistic, focusing not just on the content of the message but also on the confidence and mindset required to deliver it.
Overcoming the Confidence Barrier
One of the most significant challenges Joya encounters with her clients is the issue of confidence. She recounts how many women, particularly those who have spent years in corporate environments, struggle with the mindset needed to step into new roles or launch their own ventures. To address this, Joya incorporates "shadow work" into her coaching, a technique that delves into the subconscious beliefs that can hold individuals back.
“There’s so many scripts that were planted in your brain at probably five years old, seven years old, from a teacher, from a parent, from an aunt, a well-meaning grandmother that are probably operating you today,” Joya explains. By helping her clients uncover and reframe these deep-seated beliefs, she empowers them to show up authentically and take control of their narratives.
The Journey to Becoming a News Anchor
Joya’s journey to becoming a news anchor is a testament to her discipline, focus, and strategic mindset—qualities that are reflected in her CliftonStrengths profile. Growing up with a clear vision of her future, she pursued her goals with relentless determination, paying for her own education and making strategic career moves to position herself in the competitive field of business news.
Her path was not without its challenges. As an immigrant’s daughter with limited resources, Joya had to navigate her career largely on her own. However, she was also fortunate to have champions along the way who recognized her potential and helped her succeed. Joya’s story is a powerful reminder that success often requires not only personal drive but also the support of others.
Empowering Women Entrepreneurs
Twelve years ago, Joya made the transition from television to coaching, driven by a desire to create a meaningful body of work and make a lasting impact. Her coaching practice, which began as a side project, quickly evolved into a full-time endeavor, helping women prepare for board meetings, TED-style talks, and other high-stakes presentations.
One of the most impactful aspects of Joya’s work is her ability to help women step into their authentic selves. She recalls working with a client who struggled to get past the first round of job interviews. Through Joya’s coaching, the client learned to share a deeply personal story about her family’s experience with homelessness. This shift in authenticity not only transformed her interview process but also led to a successful job offer with a significant pay increase.
Masterminds and Global Retreats
Joya’s approach to coaching is not just about quick fixes; it’s about long-term transformation. She offers a 12-month mastermind program each year, where a small group of women work together to build their personal brands and prepare to give a live TED-style talk in New York City at the end of the mastermind.
Joya’s love for travel also plays a significant role in her coaching. She believes that big spaces inspire big ideas, and she often takes her clients on international retreats to places like Lisbon, Paris, and Istanbul. These retreats provide an opportunity for deep strategic work in environments that foster creativity and new perspectives.
In Joya Dass’s world, storytelling is more than just a skill—it’s a tool for empowerment, a pathway to confidence, and a means of leaving a lasting legacy. Through her coaching, she is helping women around the world find their voices, tell their stories, and take control of their destinies.
Whether through a TED-style talk, a boardroom presentation, or a candid conversation, Joya is helping women learn to show up authentically and powerfully, transforming their lives and the lives of those around them.
