On Career Reinvention and Defining Your Brand: A Conversation with Marketing and LinkedIn Expert Fanny Dunagan
Aug 08, 2024What does it look like to reinvent your career? Today’s Dominate Your Day guest, Fanny Dunagan, offers an inspiring story of reinvention, transitioning from a career in consulting to becoming a LinkedIn expert and entrepreneur.
Fanny began her career as a civil engineer, working in Singapore on transit system projects. Despite her success, she realized she was more of a people person, so she transitioned into business consulting. She joined Arthur Anderson, where she specialized in change management and SAP software consulting for aerospace and defense companies.
After starting her family, Fanny faced the challenge of balancing her career with motherhood. She chose to stay home with her children, but eventually felt the need to re-enter the professional world. Volunteering at a local outreach center, she helped organize job fairs and discovered her passion for helping others find employment. This experience reignited her confidence and led to the creation of Pathlynks, a marketing agency focused on technology firms.
Fanny attributes much of her success to understanding and leveraging her strengths. After working with a Strengths coach, she identified her top strengths: Connectedness, Relator, Responsibility, Includer, and Positivity.
She stresses the importance of niching down in your business, even though it might feel counterintuitive. Specializing allows you to become an expert in your field, attracting clients who value your specific expertise.
As a LinkedIn expert, Fanny shares valuable tips for building a personal brand on the platform. Key insights include:
- Educate and Serve: Shift your mindset from self-promotion to education and service. Share your knowledge, offer tips and advice, and provide valuable content to your audience.
- Inform: Use LinkedIn to inform your network about upcoming events, workshops, or conferences. Keep your audience updated on important dates and opportunities.
- Inspire: Share stories, lessons learned, and inspirational quotes. Personal stories and experiences resonate with people and can motivate them to take action.
- Entertain: Don’t be afraid to show your personality. Share hobbies, interests, and fun anecdotes. Connect your personal interests to your professional brand to make your content more relatable.
Fanny highlights the importance of LinkedIn as a professional platform with significant reach and influence. With 1 billion global users, LinkedIn is the place where professionals network, learn, and seek opportunities. Your LinkedIn profile often appears in the top search results when someone Googles your name, making it a crucial element of your online presence.
Fanny’s journey is a testament to the power of reinvention, leveraging strengths, and the importance of a strong LinkedIn presence. Inspired by success stories like hers, I’ve created an opportunity for you to transform your own career:
