Why Strengths Are Only Half the Story

strengths Oct 19, 2026

As a Gallup-Certified CliftonStrengths coach, there are three types of leaders I see every day in my work with leadership teams:

  1. There are leaders who don't know their strengths at all. They're capable and committed, but reactive—leading from urgency instead of intention.
  1. There are leaders who know their strengths, but don't practice them intentionally. They've taken the CliftonStrengths assessment. They can name their top talents. But they're not choosing their strengths—they're repeating them.
  1. There are leaders (often the highest performers) who know their strengths and use them constantly, until those strengths drift out of alignment.

If any of those sound familiar:

You're not broken. You're not behind. You're not failing.

You may simply be out of alignment.

Because strengths are powerful—but they are not the whole story.

Burnout Is Loud. Misalignment Is Quiet.

We talk about burnout a lot in leadership. And burnout is real.

But what I see most often—especially in high-performing leaders—is misalignment long before burnout.

Burnout feels like collapse.

Misalignment feels like friction.

Misalignment shows up when:

  • Leadership feels heavier than it used to—even though you're capable
  • You're doing more, but trusting less
  • You're productive, but less present
  • Small things irritate you more than they should
  • You keep telling yourself, "It's just a season"—and that season keeps extending

These aren't failures. They're early signals.

Why Strengths Are Only Half the Story

Your CliftonStrengths report will tell you how you're wired. They help you name patterns in how you think, decide, relate, and execute.

But strengths alone don't answer the deeper questions. Strengths don't tell you:

  • What matters most to you (your values)
  • Why you do what you do (your mission)
  • What your leadership is costing you emotionally (your inner state)
  • Whether you're leading from trust or control
  • Whether you're practicing leadership—or performing it

That's why I say: strengths are only half the story.

A Different Path Forward

In my book, The Internal Revolution, I introduce a framework called the Authentic Imprint™—a practical methodology for aligning who you are with how you lead, defined by the following formula:

(Your strengths + your values + your mission) x emotional recognition

Burnout isn't a personal failure. It's identity misalignment.

And the solution isn't working harder. It's working from your authentic core.

3 Action Steps for Your Week:

  1. Name what you see. Which pattern shows up most in your world right now?
  2. Ask the mirror question. Where is MY identity out of alignment?
  3. Take the Authentic Imprint™ Assessment. Discover your leadership identify scorecard. It's free and takes only 3 minutes. Take the assessment here.

Stop performing. Start leading.
